| Keeping the tradition alive. The women here have knit Cowichan sweaters. Salish women have always done work with wool, primarily weaving blankets from goat's hair and the fur of a dog much like a Samoyed. After European people arrived, our people began raising sheep. Cowichan women began knitting sweaters using their own designs. Many designs can only be knit by the family that owns the design. Even today many women still wash, cart and spin their own wool as well as knitting. Using the white, grey and black wool is more traditional, but some knitters like to experiment with different wools and different colours. Yes, you can look gorgeous and
keep warm!
