Nisga'a Dancers - Side Drummers
The group was so large many had to stand on the side. On the side by the Museum Gift Shop are a number of Nisga'a drummers, playing hand-held drums. These are in addition to the box drums of the last picture! They make a beautiful sound as well. These drums are made of leather, such as cow hide, elk hide or deer hide, stretched across a circular frame and tightened with sinew. These are often painted with a design. As you can see by the boy in the center, the drummers start young.
