Third Annual Anthany Dawson Memorial March![]() August 11th Third Annual Anthany Dawson Memorial WalkThis Sunday, the 11th of August 2002, the Capital Region Race Relations Association hosted the Third Annual Anthany Dawson Memorial walk. The walk started from Stadacona Park (near the Oak Bay Junction) at 4:00pm. This walk was to remember and celebrates the life of Anthany Dawson, a young Native man who died as a result of racial prejudice and violence. This walk is set as a reminder to the public that racial stereotyping has deadly consequences. Anthany, who suffered from a rare metabolic disorder, was treated with malice and disrespect by front line professionals whose assumption about Anthany where wrong, therefore ending in him not getting the treatment he desperately needed.“This day is not about blaming the police or the paramedics, but about learning that racism has deadly consequences.” Says Rose Henry, walk organizer. The route of the walk followed Anthany’s last steps starting from the first police report (Stadacona Park) to the place where Anthany was stopped by police and brutalized. The walk follows Oak Bay Ave to Davie St. Over a hundred citizens joined of his family for this silent and respectful walk.If you want more information, have a problem with racism or want to help call 380-7311 and ask for Shane or Rose.
